Google Search May Show Your Credit Card Number and Information

Posted in: Off Topic

With all the deals that I post about and take part in I use my credit card a lot (as I’m sure you do too).  After doing a simple search on Google I found some pretty shocking stuff that has made me rethink using my credit card online and now instead switching to either Paypal for every transaction or buying and using a prepaid credit card.  What did I find?  I found that if you do a simple search on Google for “+mastercard +5424″ you can find out people’s credit card numbers, addresses, cvv codes, expiration dates and more.  It is scary and shocking…

My Mastercard starts out with 5424 which is a common thing.  Mastercard and Visa both start their credit card numbers out with a close range of beginning 4 digits (i.e.  Mastercards may start with 5424 or 5404, etc…).  By doing a simple Google search there are results which list people’s credit card information.  What is this doing online???  After doing some research I found that there are people who hack into websites and steal the credit card information.  Then they post the information for sale.  Someone pays them $100 and they’ll receive the information for 10 people’s credit card data that was hacked and stolen.

Let me show you exactly what I am talking about.  Like I mentioned above I did that simple Google search.  I found one site where people were posting stolen credit card information.  You can view a message board post here. Or you can view the message thread here.  These were the links that my Google search provided to me based on my search! Look at how many peoples’ credit card information is there!!!!  I stop counting at 20 when I was looking at the different posts in the thread.

The point of this post is make you think about using your credit card (and especially your Debit card) online, especially if you shop at a lot of sites to cash in on all the good deals like I do.  Apparently a lot of sites have very poor credit card security and your information is not as safe as places lead you to believe.  Buyer beware.
